Roatan Give Back to Community
Roatan
Tour Details
Greenfield Children's Orphanage is run by Sandy Bay Lighthouse Ministries, a non-profit, non-denominational organization providing a loving, safe shelter and a quality bilingual education for at-risk children to prepare them for a better future.
On the 35-minute ride to the Greenfield Children's Orphanage, you will make a quick stop in Spanish Town to take pictures. As you enjoy the scenery, your English-speaking guide will inform you of the history and culture of Roatan.
When you arrive at the orphanage, you will meet the children and the directors, Orsy and Banesa Cruz, who are natives of Honduras and the "parents" of this big family. You will attend a program with the children, which includes a short devotional (spiritual reading). You will learn about the way the home provides for them, as well as tour the facilities. The children of the orphanage love to play soccer and will surely invite you to scrimmage with them. The children genuinely enjoying meeting new people from distant places and are appreciative of the time spent with them playing soccer or talking about their interests, hopes, and dreams.
Two hours pass quickly, and you will say your goodbyes, board your transportation, and head to West End Beach for a 30 minute stop. Once at West End Beach, be sure to stick your toes in the water and relax in the sand as you reflect on your experience at the orphanage. You can also try delicious local made chocolates and sip on a hot cup of flavorful, fresh brewed coffee at a local beachfront shop (food and drinks not included in the cost).
As your time at West End Beach comes to an end, you will be taken back to your cruise ship pier, your hearts full after spending your time giving back to the community of Roatan. Please note, the children are in school from February to October and cannot interact with guests; November to January is vacation time where they can visit with guests.
A needs list can be found at the Current Needs link of the orphanage's website. If you are considering an In-Kind donation for the children, it is suggested that an appropriate article of clothing be donated rather than a toy, and toiletries rather than candy. Should you choose to bring donation items from the U.S., be sure to "DECLARE" them on the ship the day before you are scheduled to arrive in Roatan. The home will graciously accept cash donations should you want to donate to their worthy cause.
Please note, round trip transportation in an air-conditioned, fully licensed and insured vehicle, and a certified bilingual (English/Spanish) speaking excursion guide are included in the cost of the excursion. All other costs are at your own expense.
