What is Travel Protection Insurance?

Travel Protection is vacation insurance and it's designed to protect your vacation investment in the event you must cancel due to unforeseen circumstances that may interfere with your ability to travel, or if things to go wrong while you are on your cruise.

Travel Insurance covers:

Should I buy Travel Protection?

We highly recommend you purchase Travel Protection Insurance. Regent Seven Seas Cruises does charge a penalty if you must cancel your cruise within their set penalty periods. And it is unwise to expect that they will make an exception, even under the direst circumstances. Travel Protection will refund these penalties if you cancel for a covered reason.

You should also buy Travel Protection because most Americans have little or no health care coverage when they travel outside the U.S. When you board a foreign-flagged cruise ship, you physically enter another country. For those who do have health coverage in effect outside the U.S., including those on Medicare, medical coverage and medical evacuation is not included. Airlift transportation from a ship to a qualified medical facility can cost thousands and thousands of dollars, and without travel protection, you must pay out of pocket, often up front!

Travel Protection covers emergency medical transportation when necessary. Regent Seven Seas cruise ships are designed to provide medical care for certain temporary illnesses and accidents; they are not intended or capable of providing on-going treatment for emergency or pre-existing medical conditions. If you must be evacuated, your Travel Protection would cover the costs.

Regent Seven Seas Cruises is not responsible when things go wrong or obligated to connect you with the ship if you miss it. And if you are flying to the port of embarkation, the airline may not be willing or able to send you somewhere else to pick up the ship. Travel Protection will reimburse you the costs incurred for missed connections and flight delays.

Any one of the above reasons is good enough to buy travel protection, but consider that every one of them applies to everybody all the time! The bottom line is that travel protection is the only way you may get your money back if you have to cancel your Regent cruise.

What is Regent Seven Seas Cruises Cancellation Policy?

Once a deposit is made, all reservations are subject to an administration fee for any changes or cancellations made. This administration fee may be converted to a future cruise credit redeemable on bookings made up to 12 months after cancellation and for travel any time. This administration fee is charged by Regent Seven Seas Cruises and is not covered by travel protection.

The following cancellation charges will be assessed for all cancellations received prior to departure up to the scheduled time of departure. For all air-inclusive cruise or cruisetour packages cancelled after receipt of the airline ticket, refunds will be processed after the return of the airline ticket. The following charges will apply to cancellations received as follows:

Cruises 14 Nights or Less
From date of deposit to 121 days prior to vacation date: $100 per person booking administration fee. This admin fee may be converted to a future cruise credit redeemable on bookings made up to 12 months after cancellation and for travel any time.

  • 120-91 days prior to vacation date: 15% of cruise fare per person
  • 90-61 days prior to vacation date: 50% of cruise fare per person
  • 60-31 days prior to vacation date: 75% of cruise fare per person
  • 30-0 days prior to vacation date: 100% of cruise fare per person

Cruises 15 Nights or Greater
From date of deposit to 151 days prior to vacation date: $100 per person administration fee. This admin fee may be converted to a future cruise credit redeemable on bookings made up to 12 months after cancellation and for travel any time.

  • 150-121 days prior to vacation date: 25% of cruise fare per person
  • 120-91 days prior to vacation date: 50% of cruise fare per person
  • 90-76 days prior to vacation date: 75% of cruise fare per person
  • 75-0 days prior to vacation date: 100% of cruise fare per person

Cancellation of Ancillary Items

  • Pre-and Post -Cruise Hotel Packages Within 45 days prior to departure: 100% fee
  • Pre-and Post -Cruise Land Packages Within 60 days prior to departure: 100% fee
  • Pre-Bookable Adventures Ashore/Overland Programs Within 45 days prior to departure: 100% fee
  • Regent Choice Shore Excursions Within 36 hours of tour departure: 100% fee
  • Private Transfers 4 days prior to transfer: 100% fee
  • Destination Service Fee On payment of fee: 100% fee
  • Airfare Within 60 days prior to departure: 100% fee
  • Air Supplemental Fee when confirmed: 100% fee

Reservation Changes: Regent Seven Seas does not allow name changes after the deposit has been received. A new reservation will be made and will be subject to the new terms and conditions that are applicable at the time of booking. The existing reservation will be cancelled and will be assessed the applicable cancellation fees.

What does a Travel Protection Policy include?

A typical travel protection policy includes three main benefits:

  • Trip cancellation/interruption
  • Major medical with medical evacuation
  • Baggage protection

Most policies offer some type of travel delay coverage, but it may or may not cover delays to strikes or other labor problems.

The trip cancellation benefit is designed to reimburse you up to the total cost of your vacation in the event a medical emergency forces you to cancel under penalty with Regent Seven Seas. Trip cancellation benefits apply prior to the start of the cruise, while trip interruption coverage works for you after you have left home. If an emergency to anyone traveling, or to those immediate family members left behind, causes you to cut the trip short, trip interruption is intended to reimburse you for the missed portion of the vacation and the out-of-pocket expenses necessary to return home. Without these two important benefits, you have no recourse but to lose both cruise and the money you've paid for it.

Major medical treatment and medical evacuation benefits offer you medical protection outside the area covered by your primary care provider without a deductible. In addition, emergency medical transportation, including helicopter airlift, is covered to transport you to a medical facility where you can be treated.

Baggage protection provides you with reimbursement for lost, stolen or damaged luggage. Most people do not consider the repercussions of taking a cruise without their clothing! Baggage benefits can provide you with the necessary cash to replace some of the missing articles so that your cruise is not a complete fashion emergency.

What does Travel Protection cover and not cover?

In general, the insurance portion of a travel protection plan covers medical emergencies, such as a death, illness or injury to you, your traveling companions and any immediate family members.

Business and personal obligations are not covered for trip cancellation under the insurance portion of a travel protection policy, unless additional coverage is purchased and explicitly listed on your policy confirmation details.

It is important to know that the RegentCare Guest Protection travel insurance policy offered by Regent does not cover pre-existing medical conditions under the trip cancellation clause. A pre-existing medical condition is usually defined as one for which you have been treated within 120-60 days of purchasing the insurance. Please note that terminal illness and mental illness are not covered as pre-existing medical conditions. RegentCruises.com recommends that you contact the insurance company directly for specific information about your personal situation.

What is considered a "pre-existing" condition?

A pre-existing medical condition is one that existed during the 120-60 days preceding and including the policy effective date. A condition is pre-existing if you:

1. Received a recommendation for a diagnostic test, examination or medical treatment; or
2. Took or received a prescription for drugs or medicine.

Item( 2) of this definition does not apply to a condition that is treated or controlled solely through the taking of prescription drugs or medicine and remains treated or controlled without any adjustment or change in the required prescription throughout the designated period before coverage is effective under the policy.

What happens if I get sick or hurt while I'm on the trip?

Travel protection can take much of the worry out of a bad situation by paying for the medical evacuation required to transport you to the nearest hospital. In addition, assistance services are included to verify coverage so that you can be treated immediately. The assistance services can also help you communicate with the doctors if you don't speak the same language.

Without the medical coverage included in a travel protection plan, you will be forced to pay out of pocket up front for medical treatment and medical transportation, and you'll be on your own dealing with the doctors and the hospitals in a foreign country.

How much does Travel Protection Insurance cost?

  • Cabin price including port charges, taxes and fees

RegentCruises.com's Generali Vacation Travel Protection is based on a set percentage, no more than 7.5 percent of the total vacation cost, so the price fluctuates up and down as items are added to or deleted from your invoice. Regent Seven Seas Cruises prices its RegentCare Guest Protection Plan premiums based on the length of the cruise and a calculated percentage, approximately 20 percent, of the total vacation cost.

If you become ill or injured, first see a doctor. Then if you find that you need to cancel, contact RegentCruises.com immediately. We will speak to Regent Seven Seas Cruises on your behalf, cancel your cruise, and advise you on what to do next. Whenever possible, we will request the necessary forms to assist you in beginning the claims procedure. You must complete the appropriate forms and return them to the insurance company with documentation to support your claim, so it's important to have visited the doctor first.

What else can I do to increase my chances of a trouble-free vacation?

In addition to purchasing travel protection, consider flying to the city of embarkation a day prior to the sailing date. This will help offset weather or airline mechanical delays, and you'll arrive on board your cruise more rested. Make sure all of your baggage is clearly labeled. Consider keeping a separate, written inventory of all the items you are taking with you including cameras, jewelry, clothing, etc as well as their approximate values and descriptions. What if I have problems during my trip?

Your Travel Protection Policy will include both a U.S. and International 24-Hour Emergency Telephone Number to call in the unlikely event you experience a problem during your trip. Please document everything carefully. This includes date, time, names, supervisor names, locations, stores, facilities, phone numbers, people you spoke with, etc. Be sure to save all receipts and keep them organized so that you can file your claim later. The more thorough you are, the quicker your claim will be processed.

If I must cancel, when will I get my refund?

When you cancel, you must begin filing a claim with the travel insurance company. This involves paperwork. If you had to cancel for medical reasons, you will be expected to provide proof from physicians. If you experience travel delays or lost baggage, you'll be expected to provide copies of all receipts for expenses as well as a summary of events and actions taken to resolve your issues.

Upon reviewing all of the material you submit and upon approval, the insurance company will send your reimbursement check within 30 - 60 days.

What could happen? Why trip insurance is so important?
Why are travel insurance and travel assistance services so important? Unforeseen circumstances can force travelers to cancel or postpone their trip and risk losing payments they've made. Below are true stories from actual travelers. Take a minute and read about what could have happened to their vacation investment if they had not purchased trip insurance.

Little one gets sick
A client's 3-year-old daughter developed an ear infection two days before the vacation was to begin. The client had to cancel the trip, but they were in a 100% penalty period with the cruise line, and stood to lose their money. Their entire claim was paid using trip insurance.

Flood damage
Mr. and Mrs. J. live in the Midwest, and their home sustained massive damage due to severe flooding. They cancelled their trip in order to take care of the damage to their house. Their entire claim was covered. (Similarly, Access America has also had clients who had to cancel due to damage from earthquakes, fires and hurricanes.)

Sickness or Injury before Trip
Tom planned a ski trip to Aspen several months in advance. Three weeks before his Aspen trip, he broke his leg at a local ski area. If not for travel insurance, he would have lost his entire trip investment.

Because they missed most of their trip, the Trip Interruption clause covered most of their out of pocket expenses and plus the value of the unused trip components.

Medical Evacuation
A couple from Seattle was on an Alaskan cruise when one of them developed a serious medical condition that required emergency transportation to the nearest land-based hospital. The Trip Insurance provider determined that the nearest hospital was inadequate for the patient and flew him to a hospital in Seattle. Insurance covered the cost of the evacuation and also paid all related expenses incurred for getting the client to the nearest adequate medical facility and then transporting him to a hospital near his home, as well as the unused segment of the client's trip.
